about

The Formers is a sculptural sitcom that takes place in Lower Saxony over the course of two seasons. The protagonists, the Formers, are a fictional group comprised of any willing participant, an open-source fam*ly that looks for comfort, belief and conflict within the safe space of the white cube (the living room of the artworld). By transposing a domestic diagram into an exhibition setting, the project asks how living rooms behave as intersectional expressions of class, belief, race, gender, and age. Living rooms tell stories, set boundaries, and often pretend to be something they aren’t. Not unlike exhibition spaces, they’re confusingly public and keep up appearances even when no one’s looking.

While we see a generative potential in the living room as a space, we are critical of its roots in reproductive policies, liberalization of capital, and the individualisation of the self. By creating a shapeshifting diagram of domesticity within an institutional space, The Formers combines seemingly incompatible durational premises, modes of hospitality, and artistic formats. Working with fabric, film, sitcom scores, songs, and space, the affect-specific installation uses the common site of the living room as a way to explore the criticality of coziness and the kitsch of concrete. Developed by artists Guilherme Maggessi (AT/BR), Rafal Morusiewicz (AT/PL), and Seth Weiner & Sadie Siegel (AT/USA), the concept stems from a meeting of the artists’ individual and collective practices, converging different modes of affect-specificity, pedagogy and processuality.
